Two of the three drama queens forced my hand and had to be sent out of class (to the principal's office, essentially) during the final period of the day. They came into class full of smiles and jokes, but as soon as the bell rang their heads were down and their eyes closed. After about 20 minutes I called their names and said "wake up and put your head up!" One girl complied, but the other played opossum and after about the fifth call (by this time her classmates were also calling her name.) Of course, the moment her head came up the attitude started, "I wasn't asleep, I was paying attention!" I've found it's easier to just ignore it. After a few minutes and finishing the current example, I said "Have I lost anybody, and if so, where did I leave you?" From the side of the classroom I hear, "Yeah, you lost me," to which I just smiled and rolled my eyes, to let her know I was displeased, but not to start the inevitable argument, because we both knew she'd been asleep through most of the information. Little Miss Attitude looks to her and says "were you asleep, too?" And they both have a good laugh about it. That was the final straw, I'm sick of these two (or three when they are all there) showing blatant disrespect to both me and the class in general. I sent them out.
The sad part, is that nothing will happen. They'll arrive back on Monday and brag to their classmates about how they didn't get in trouble because their principal is really nice (we have 4 assistant principals who handle discipline and they happen to report to the same one.) He'll roll his eyes at me and wonder why I sent them out over something as trivial as sleeping in class, even though I wrote a lengthy email and spoke with him personally about it. And we'll start all over again. I'll call their parents, but that won't have much effect either, or at least this has been my experience.
Oh well, I have the whole weekend to enjoy. I have two wonderful dogs that would love to go on a walk (if it doesn't storm too bad), a book that needs to be read, a Mike's Hard Berry that needs to be drank, and an amazing husband who wants to make a baby WOO HOO!! Later
