The reason I'm here right now.
We had chicken nuggets and french fries for dinner tonight. Mike is out with friends so it's just the kids and I. It's always a little sad having dinner with just the three of us, and it reminds me that even though Mike and have our problems I would never want to not get to see him everyday. But I digress, again...
Along side nuggets and fries I put a second plate for both kids. I brought out the ketchup, mustard, mayo and bbq sauce and put a bit of each onto both plates. I talked up the colors and small vs. big amount, etc.
Spencer's not a dipper, he generally doesn't like sauces unless they are already mixed into the food. In fact, he will often dip his food and the bring it about an inch away from him mouth, make a funny face at it and put the piece of food aside lol. So I dipped my finger in the bbq and reached toward Spencer's mouth, fully expecting a very whiny no. To my surprise he opened his mouth and tried it. He didn't like it and washed it down with milk. I figured that would be the end of it, but again he surprised me by trying each of the four things before the meal was over, w/o me prompting him even!
Rachel is cool with dipping, but she's not to the point of demanding ketchup with every meal (yet?). So she had a similar plate to Spencer. I dipped one of my nuggets in her bbq and she followed suit. Not a fan. A few minutes later, she starts whining and I look over to see her mouth is bright yellow and she's frantically trying to get me to take the offending french fry. Not a fan of mustard. She tried a fingertip amount of mayo and was okay with it. Ketchup is a sure thing, no need to 'try' it. She grabs a nugget, hovers it above the mayo, rethinks, moves it over the mustard, stops only for a split second and then plops the whole thing into the ketchup. She licked the ketchup off the nugget and started over. It was just adorable watching the expressions on her face as she moved the nugget around the plate, above each sauce until she found the one that was right.
We just came inside. I promised myself that I wouldn't come up with lame excuses why we couldn't play outside this year as it gets colder. If they are willing to put on the layers without a fight, I'll be willing to go outside with them. It really bothers me when I realize sometimes I distract them from wanting to go outside by offering tv. That's the opposite of what I want to teach them. So tonight we went outside and then on an impromptu short walk. It's 45 with a chilly wind, not too bad. Honestly, this is my preferred temp lol.
Enough rambling about little things for today...
